Fashion Cats - Haute Cature!
Now for something completely different … I’m not sure how I feel about this - a book featuring photos of white cats dressed up in costumes ! - but the images are awfully sweet looking and creative. “Fashion Cats” consists of the creations of Japanese “cat tailor” Takako Iwasa.  In an interview last year in the Global Post, the designer, known as...

Snow White & The Little Mermaid: Backyard View...
The view out the back window of my previous Park Slope, Brooklyn apartment where Snow White and The Little Mermaid are seen frolicking. (One day the pictures disappeared and it was just a plain blank canvas again.)

27 year old Red Tail Hawk Goes on Circuitous...
Found sitting on top of a dead rabbit in the middle of Route 17M in rural upstate New York, it was discovered that this Red Tail Hawk had a band on her. Upon further investigation, rehabilitators realized that she is 27 years old, one of the oldest living hawks known. New York Times: “A motorist, worried that the bird would be hit by a car, stopped to pick her up after seeing her feeding...

Books, Coffee, Democracy: Vox Pop Cafe -- Then......
This photo was taken earlier this year on a near perfect February day outside Vox Pop (“Voice of the People”), the former coffee shop/political space/restaurant/bar/book store in Brooklyn neighborhood Ditmas Park/Flatbush. Everyone was inside - except — unless you look closely, you’ll miss him! — for this funny dog seated on a bench right outside the window. Vox...

New Moon Arrives Monday, August 9th: "This New...
Well, how excellent is that? Astrologer Joni Ross writes that the next New Moon will occur on Monday, August 9th and it will be in the sign of Leo. According to Joni, with this new moon, we will “write, direct and star in our own life story.” ! As someone who is writing a book and starting a new venture (more on that to come!), I consider this good news! For a refresher on the...

Manhattan Street Scene: Think Coffee Bleecker &...
Outside v. cool coffee shop Think Coffee: Bleecker & Bowery. In addition to being fair trade, Think’s blends are organic & shade grown (bird friendly; conserves biodiversity) offering the perfect triumvirate in conscious coffee ideals! There’s artwork featured on the shop walls and the coffee shop functions as a mini-gallery, with art receptions periodically. I’ve...

Remembering the Prospect Park Geese - My Own...
I have so many experiences of walking through Prospect Park and encountering the beloved Canada Geese (Rest in Peace). I haven’t been able to venture back to the park knowing that they are no longer - and of their fate — as of last Thursday, July 8th. The Park geese had such personality — if they sensed you might have a morsel of food, they would come en masse out of the...

Old School New York on Bond Street: D+D Salvage
July 4th in Manhattan - some streets amazingly quiet and still, like Bond Street off the Bowery. I ventured past D+D Salvage Scrap Metal - closed, of course - with its hand painted sign and rough-around-the-edges look. It seemed to represent a New York City mostly vanished (or is it banished?). Notice the tattered and faded American flag on the second floor fire escape.

Craving a Summer Cocktail? An Elder Berry Smash...
It is HOT here in NYC and anything that will cool us off is welcome! This week’s New York magazine features four recipes for summer cocktails from local restaurants, including this recipe for Elder Berry Smash from Little Italy’s Kenmare created by their “mixologist” Charlotte Voisey. Ms. Voisey says “there is something about the combination of berries, elderflower,...

Operating quietly for a few months under the radar, The Lower East Side Girls Club proudly debuted its Celebrate Cafe yesterday located inside The Bowery Poetry Club at Bowery and 1st Street in Manhattan. Pictured above is Sierra Williams, a member of the girls club, who officially greeted me when I entered the cafe. Celebrate Cafe is another one of the unique ventures The Lower East Side Girls...
